Competition Rally Obedience Classes

Try this relatively young dog sport which allows you to talk to and praise your dog as you work together!

Pre-requisite: Healthy dog, aged 6 months or older with normal eyesight, hearing, and gait. Evaluation by Instructor.

Dog must have fairly reliable loose-leash heeling behavior and an automatic (or an immediate sit on a verbal command) sit while informal heel position on left side of owner, and a “down” on command mastered before being allowed to participate in this class.

Other suggested alternatives to this class might be attendance at Weekly Obedience Class or a series of private lessons.

INTRODUCTION TO COMPETITION AKC RALLY OBEDIENCE

Equipment: Dog, flat buckle collar (no tags), 6 foot leash, training treats and other reinforcers.

Pre-requisites:

(Note: AKC Competition is fun but VERY competitive. If dog or owner lacks the prerequisites listed below, we ask that they take a refresher session of 6 weeks of weekly “Best Buddies Pet Obedience Class,” or the equivalent. Dogs & owners will be tested the first day of class.)

Dogs must:
1.) Be able to loose leash walk (You can be vocal, but you cannot use treats this test) without dropping attention from handler (no leash tightness or pulls) for at least 1 minute, and
2.) Be able to sit-stay on command and whenever the handler stops moving.

Owner must:
1.) Understand the basics of positive reinforcement training and how to use a positive reinforcer effectively, and
2.) Know what a positive reinforcement trainer should do when a dog does something “wrong.”
